Senior Health: Treating Senior Psoriasis Naturally

By 9  am on

Although uncommon, it’s not unheard of for seniors to be diagnosed with psoriasis, often caused by changes to health or medication. When treating your elderly loved one’s psoriasis symptoms, begin with a strategy that includes natural home remedies, like the following recommended by Vancouver elder care professionals.

Moisture is key to eliminating discomfort associated with dry skin. Make sure the air in your senior loved one’s home is adequately moist by adding a humidifier. Also, make sure he or she drinks at least 64 ounces of water each day.

The healthy fat in olive oil is great for heart health, and it’s a soothing remedy for the scaly, red skin associated with psoriasis. Gently massage olive oil directly onto affected areas.

The viscous liquid from inside the leaves of the aloe plant provides topical relief for the itching and burning of psoriasis. If possible, get the aloe directly from the plant. Otherwise, use a gel with the highest aloe content available. Aloe tablets should not be consumed without a prescription.

Hot water can dry out skin, so advise your elderly loved one to enjoy lukewarm baths. Add dead sea salt or Epsom salts to the bath, as these mineral-rich salts help alleviate the itching and redness associated with psoriasis.

Turmeric is an effective anti-inflammatory, and the ingredient in chili peppers called capsaicin has been shown to reduce psoriatic arthritis pain. If your senior family member enjoys these flavors, add small amounts of these spices to his or her regular diet. Ingesting less than 3 grams of turmeric per day is considered safe by the FDA.

Eliminate Chemicals

The perfumes and dyes in many soaps, deodorants and detergents can agitate psoriasis symptoms. Work with your elderly loved one to find natural versions of household products, or at least products labeled as appropriate for sensitive skin.
