There are plenty of regular and one-time events held in Vancouver that can help seniors boost their health and wellbeing. If you’re looking for local events to lighten up your parent’s or grandparent’s day, here are a few suggestions provided by a well-known Vancouver senior care organization.
1. Introduction to Organic Gardening
The West End Community Centre at 870 Denman Street is organizing a free gardening workshop on March 9th, from 7pm to 9pm. In this workshop, seniors will learn the basics of preparing, planning, and beginning a food garden. They’ll also learn easy techniques for starting plants in the garden and indoors, customized to their living space. Free seeds will also be given at this workshop. Your loved one can use these skills to grow fresh vegetables and maintain a healthy diet. Registration is encouraged.
2. 21st Century Flea Market
The Croatian Cultural Centre at 3250 Commercial Drive is hosting an antique market on March 19th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Seniors can enjoy socializing with vendors and exploring over 175 tables of everything imaginable, from paintings to retro furnishings and linens to collectibles. Your senior loved one can bring a maximum of three treasures for appraisal, for a small fee. Admission is $5 per person. This venue is also fully wheelchair accessible.
3. Book Club
The Fraserview Branch Library at 1950 Argyle Drive arranges a reading event on the first Saturday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. This reading club can provide your loved one with a chance to socialize and make friends with other book lovers and discuss recent book reads. Joining a reading club allows seniors to expand their knowledge and read books on different genres.
4. Intro to Basic Budgeting
The Britannia Branch Library at 1661 Napier Street is offering a finance workshop on March 7th, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. This workshop aims to empower seniors and help them get in control of their finances and debt. Seniors can learn how to manage their spending and receive tips on planning a budget.
